Email Dr Lyle Vail AM

Lyle Vail and his wife Anne Hoggett are joint Directors of the Australian Museum’s Lizard Island Research Station (LIRS). Together, they develop and manage the internationally-renown coral reef research facility on the northern Great Barrier Reef.

Since starting at LIRS in 1990, the couple has comprehensively redeveloped LIRS and markedly increased its scientific productivity. Raising funds to enable such things is an important part of their work.

Lyle’s science background is in the biology, ecology, and taxonomy of echinoderms. Being a joint Director of LIRS is a great privilege since it is a hive of research activity undertaken by senior and early career researchers. Working closely with the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation to raise funds for capital developments and the Fellowship and Grants program is inspirational and a great pleasure. Lobbying government agencies for safe but sensible diving and boating regulations for marine scientists is a never-ending pursuit.
