Dr Joseph DiBattista is a Research Associate of the Australian Museum. Joey was the Curator and Group Manager in the Ichthyology Section at the Australian Museum from 2018-2023. After completing his PhD at McGill University in Canada on the mating systems of tropical shark populations using pedigree-based genetics approaches, Dr DiBattista went on to complete a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology (2009-2012) and a research position in the Reef Ecology Lab at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (2013-2015), both focused on the biogeography of Indo-West Pacific fishes. He then completed an Early Career Research Fellowship (ECRF) at Curtin University and continues to maintain a close collaboration with the staff and students affiliated with the TrEnD Laboratory.

Dr DiBattista's current research is focused on understanding the origins of reef fish biodiversity and how it is maintained using a combination of traditional and next generation sequencing approaches. He is particularly interested in coastal ecosystems, understanding the effects of tropicalisation on Australian fish species and identifying those that may act as indicators of change, and exploring new ways to track monitor and monitor environmental shifts in our oceans with environmental DNA (eDNA).

During his career, he has organised and/or participated in over 60 research trips, starting in the Western Atlantic Ocean and more recently moving into the Indo-West Pacific, including amazing experiences in difficult to access countries like Yemen and Somalia. Given that he also has a keen interest in creative writing, he is always receptive to media opportunities to describe exciting aspects of his research.
