Profile

I am a new hire in the Ichthyology Section at AM (March 2018) and an Early Career Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the TrEnD Laboratory at Curtin University via a joint appointment.

After completing my PhD at McGill University in Canada on the mating systems of tropical shark populations using pedigree-based genetics approaches, I went on to complete a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology (2009-2012) and a research position in the Reef Ecology Lab at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (2013-2015), both focused on the biogeography of Indo-West Pacific fishes. My current research is focused on understanding the origins of reef fish biodiversity and how it is maintained using a combination of traditional and next generation sequencing approaches. I am particularly interested in coastal ecosystems, understanding the effects of tropicalisation on Australian fish species and identifying those that may act as indicators of change, and exploring new ways to track monitor and monitor environmental shifts in our oceans with environmental DNA (eDNA).

During my career, I’ve organised and/or participated in over 60 research trips, starting in the Western Atlantic Ocean and more recently moving into the Indo-West Pacific, including amazing experiences in difficult to access countries like Yemen and Somalia. Given that I also have a keen interest in creative writing, I am always open to opportunities to describe exciting aspects of my research.
