The avifauna of Australasia has a long evolutionary history. Material evidence of this is provided by the fossil record. Many modern taxa are represented in the record, as are some now extinct groups.

Unfortunately, a number of characteristic bird groups are not yet represented and the record has many temporal and taxonomic gaps. Many bird fossils already in collections have yet to be studied, and new specimens are being found regularly. The identification of these fossil taxa, and placing them within a phylogenetic framework, helps illuminate the evolution of birds in this region of the world.
