Reptiles include crocodiles and their relatives, tortoises and turtles, snakes and lizards. Australia contains around thirteen per cent of the total world species of reptiles and is a wonderful place to see and study them. Reptiles are well suited to Australia's variable climate, because during long periods of drought, they can go without food in cool shelters until better times return. They were one of the first really successful group of animals to colonise land but some later adapted to life in water. This box contains some real specimens of Australian reptiles.
