There are seventeen known species of penguins. They are found only in the Southern Hemisphere, their ranges extending from the extremes of the Antarctic to the equator, though most of their numbers are found in the cooler climates. All penguins are flightless but 'fly' through the water, flapping their modified wings or flippers. The Little or Fairy Penguin, shown in this box, is the only penguin to breed in Australia and is a favourite sight coming ashore in large groups after nightfall. This box also contains information about other penguins and the way they live.
