Primary teacher

Kate has been teaching in N.S.W public schools for over 10 years. In those years she has specialised in Stages 2 and 3 (years 4, 5 and 6). For the past 7 years, Kate has been working at Chatswood Public School and has participated in numerous ecostudies, the most recent involving an endangered ecological community in a remnant blue gum high forest in conjunction with Macquarie University, Chatswood High School and selected year 6 classes. This study allowed students to determine the abundance of flora and fauna in the area and to observe first hand the threats and pressures placed on these native organisms by introduced plant and animal species, deforestation and other human factors. Student’s integrated technology into this study with the use of NOVAS (hand held computers) to record birdcalls and data collected in the field. Kate coordinates the S.R.C, which actively promotes environmental awareness. The student body this year has embarked on an electricity and water audit of the school aimed at making Chatswood P.S more environmentally friendly and highlighting the need for conservation of resources to all students on a daily basis. Kate has an active interest in science particularly in the area of environmental education. She enjoys gardening, bush walking, camping, fossil collecting and travelling. Kate aims to instil respect and a love of the outdoor environment and our amazing planet into all the students she teaches.
