The Cultural Kilometre

The Australian Museum has partnered with the other eight cultural institutions sited along Sydney's "Beaux-Arts" axis that stretches from the harbour along Macquarie Street and Hyde Park to create the Cultural Kilometre.

The Australian Museum, the Anzac Memorial, Royal Botanic Gardens, Art Gallery of NSW, State Library of NSW, Reserve Bank of Australia, Parliament House, Sydney Living Museums and the Sydney Jewish Museum are laid out along an approximate one kilometre stretch of road. This vital cultural kilometre exerts a gravitational pull and creates a set of interconnected places for schools that integrates the spaces between the physical buildings, the collections, programs and people within them.

Our mission is to develop a clearly defined, long-term plan to promote, position and activate the 'Cultural Kilometre' as an outstanding education destination.

A coordinated approach between cultural partners allows schools to see and communicate with institutions that provide opportunities for connected curriculum based learning opportunities within the surrounding cultural community.

Together we share resources and bring about a more coherent and visible delivery of particular aspects of the NSW syllabus for the Australian Curriculum. As active partners in the precinct network, we want every child and student to have the chance to visit, experience and participate in extraordinary work and immerse themselves in the variety of architecture, places and programs that will impact their lives and learning in real and tangible ways.
