Locations include Rabaul, Bougainville, Samarai, Trobriands, Gulf, Milne Bay, Rigo, Kanosia and Barodobo Rubber Plantations, Kemp Welch Plantation, Government Stations and Burns Philp operations and ships. There are also images from plantations in the Malay States and the Vailala oil fields, Western Papua. Subjects include plantation buildings and activities, staff games and European leisure activities, portraits, artefacts, dwellings, village scenes, social customs, wharves and ships (including the shipwreck of SS Mindoro), canoes and landscapes.
Richard Prosser Walshe
Richard Prosser Walshe (1884-1980) was born in Ireland and came to Australia in 1912. He soon moved to Papua, where he worked as an Accountant and later Visiting Agent and General Manager for plantation companies producing rubber, sisal and coconuts until 1924. The photographs date from this period.
Later Walshe also spent time in British Solomons, Fiji and Papua before returning to Sydney in 1938 after which he practiced as a Public Accountant and Tax Agent until 1965.
