Image: Replica 'ahu'ula cape by Rick Makanaaloha Kia'imeaokekanaka San Nicolas
Detail of the hand-made replica of the feathered cape presented to Captain James Cook by Chief Kalaniopu’u of Hawaii in 1778 during Cook’s third voyage of exploration in the Pacific. The cape was commissioned by the museum to allow the original cape, one of the 200 Treasures of the Australian Museum, to be stored in the collections area to prevent further damage from light and vibrations. The cape was made by Rick Makanaaloha Kia‘imeaokekanaka San Nicolas and presented by him to the museum in June 2018.
