Lime Container, Solomon Islands E32013

This bamboo lime container is from Uji Island or Uki Ni Masi Island in Makira Province of the Solomon Islands. The lightly incised decoration is filled with pigment often comprising charcoal and tree sap. In many parts of Melanesia powdered lime (burnt coral or shells) is chewed with a mixture of betel leaf and nut to produce a mild stimulant or to ease hunger. The Museum has no documentation on this container.
