Japanese Helmet E69875

Samurai helmet in the Australian Museum collection. This is one of many stylistic variants of a star helmet - hoshi kabuto. The helmet bowl was made from several individual iron plates joined by rivets with large, domed heads called hoshi - star. These star-rivets gave the helmet its name. At the base of the rivets are washers, resembling chrysanthemums flower. Distinctive raised ridges of the adjacent plates give the helmet its structural strength.
