E077644 shield, wood, St. Clair Mission Station, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.

This shield is from St Clair Mission in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. The shield is carved from a solid piece of wood. It is very small and narrow tapering to a point at either end. A handle has been carved into the back of the shield. This style of shield was restricted to the south-east area of Australia. This particular shield is very small and could have been made for the tourist trade. It was collected by Alexander Morrison in the late 19th or early 20th Century and acquired by the Australian Museum in 1981.
