Breeding Bubbles - Jenny Ough

We were diving in the Swan River, in Perth, at night when we chanced across a big patch of Bubble Shells (Hydatina physis) – 10 or more. They are normally found alone or in a group of two or three. This particular pair was mating and presented a perfect photo opportunity. They cannot retreat entirely into their shells. The animal in front is facing left; the other is burrowing its head into the riverbed (to lay eggs perhaps?) on the right.
