Donor-funded projects

There are a number of ways that you can engage with and support the AM’s work. Donor support enables important work across four key pillars of engagement:


Lord Howe Island Expedition
Funded by Graeme Wood Foundation and AMF donors

A science, research and conservation expedition to benchmark native and introduced animal populations on Lord Howe Island.

South Western Pacific Marine Biodiversity Expedition
Funded by AMF donors

An expedition to enhance our understanding of the marine biodiversity of outer reefs in the south western Pacific, focusing on fish and invertebrates.

Digi Vol
Funded by AMF donors

A program to map a range of important AM specimens in high resolution 3D visualisations, imagery, text description, and genetic sequences. This gives researchers around the world access to the AM’s collection of rare and extinct species.

Australian Bio-Diversity Research
Funded by Mrs Mary Holt and the late Dr John Holt

An investigation into important potential biodiversity hotspots in South Eastern Australia, including a survey of the diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians in Mt Kaputar and the New England Tablelands.



Restoration of the historic Westpac Long Gallery
Funded by AMF donors

An award-winning renovation of Australia’s first museum gallery, re-opened during the AM’s 190th anniversary with the 200 Treasures of the Australian Museum exhibition.

Bilas – Adornment and Identity in PNG
Supported by Patricia Porritt Acquisition Fund

Acquisition of elaborate headdresses and body adornments from three cultural communities in the Papua New Guinea highlands.

The installation of a major cultural sculpture of nawi (canoes) for AM’s Gadi exhibition, informing us about the rich cultures of Aboriginal Sydney. This installation pays respect to Aboriginal women who for a long time were not included in the historical records.


Balun Gilamahla (River Journey Weaving)
Supported by Patricia Porritt Acquisition Fund

Bringing together Aboriginal weavers living across the Bundjalung and Quandamooka Nations to create woven canoes and sculptural interwoven objects, showcasing their weaving techniques and celebrating their culture.



Museum in a Box
Supported by Perpetual Nominees

A school loan case with real specimens, casts, artefacts, dioramas, images, digital resources, books and teachers’ notes for use inside schools in rural and remote areas of Australia. The project includes 30 topics covering a wealth of resources, enabling schools, community groups and retirement homes and hospitals to connect with the AM’s collection.

Over the last 50 years hundreds of schools across New South Wales, thousands of teachers and over a million students have used Museum in a Box as a learning and teaching resource. In 2017/18, 520 Museum in a Boxes were loaned, reaching 112,000 people across NSW and beyond.


T Rex Autopsy
Supported by Memocorp and Stockland

A life-size model of an anatomically correct T-Rex which is used as an education tool for visitors to major NSW shopping centres, bringing the wonder of dinosaur anatomy to a broader audience.



Toi Maori Artist Residency: Professor Derek Lardelli
Funded by AMF donors

This project commissioned Professor Derek Lardelli to create a traditional artwork in response to the Whales Tohora exhibition whilst in residency at the AM. Prof Lardelli is an accomplished Ta Moko artist, painter, carver, kapahaka (dance) performer, composer, graphic designer, researcher of whakapapa (genealogy and oral histories) and kaikorero (traditional speaking). The sculpture was ceremonially presented to the AM as part of the exhibition.

Young Aboriginal Artists’ Fellowship Program

Funded by AMF donors

This program provides a unique opportunity for three young Aboriginal artists to undertake a residency within the AM’s cultural collections. They will be mentored by senior AM First Nations staff, expanding their artistic practice to engage with the Museum’s collections, resources and history.

Pacific Youth Reconnection Program
Supported by The Lansdowne Foundation

Through this program, AM cultural collections staff connect with young people from Pacific Island communities in juvenile detention. Through sharing cultural connections and the Museum’s collections, this program connects these youths with their culture and heritage.
