Travelling to Lizard Island
Flying is the only option for getting to Lizard Island. The fortnightly supply barge does not carry passengers.
Lizard Island is accessed by a daily passenger service operated by Hinterland Aviation. The light aircraft takes only 9 passengers and the flight takes about one hour. Book online with Hinterland.
The Hinterland terminal is at General Aviation, Cairns Airport, which is on the opposite side of the runway from the international and domestic terminals - about a 10 minute drive. To transfer between terminals, you will need to take a taxi at a cost of about A$15.
Baggage on the scheduled flight is strictly limited to 32 kg per person, including all carry-on baggage.
We have been asked by Hinterland to ensure that Research Station visitors do not present at check-in with large, unsquashable containers such as Nally bins. Containers that are larger in any dimension than a large suitcase do NOT fit into the lockers on some of the aircraft. Dive gear and other bulky equipment must be sent ahead by barge. For the flight, several small bags are better than one huge bag.
Transfers between airstrip and Research Station
On arrival at Lizard Island, you will be met and transferred to the Research Station by vehicle. Please advise the arrival time of your flight so we know when to expect you.
Charter flights generally cost more per person than the scheduled flight. Groups of more than 12 people who want to travel together must charter a flight because the scheduled flight does not have sufficient capacity. If you do charter a flight, advise the Research Station of the company and the expected time of arrival and departure as soon as you know these details.
Several charter companies operate from Cairns. When obtaining quotes:
- Ensure that the quote includes the landing fee at Lizard Island, which is charged per aircraft per landing. Visitors to the Research Station are not exempt from the landing fee. The operators in Cairns do not uniformly include this fee in their quotes, so make sure it is specified.
- Find out the baggage allowance for the quoted aircraft. Either stick to that allowance or arrange for more capacity.
