Travelling to Lizard Island

Flying is the only option for getting to Lizard Island. The fortnightly supply barge does not carry passengers.

Scheduled flights

Lizard Island is accessed by a regular service (RPT) operated by Hinterland Aviation. The light aircraft can take up to 9 passengers and the flight takes about one hour. Flights will operate three days per week from January 2016, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Bookings can be made online or over the phone with Hinterland Aviation (+61 (0)7 4040 1333). All fares are fully flexible so you are able to change dates of travel and passenger names at no extra cost. They are also refundable with payment of an administration fee. These flights are subject to availability so please book well in advance to secure your travel dates.

The Hinterland Aviation terminal is located at Hangar 7, Tom McDonald Drive, General Aviation, Cairns Airport, which is on the opposite (western) side of the runway from the international and domestic terminals - about a 10 minute drive. To transfer between terminals, you will need to take a taxi at a cost of about A$20.

Delaware North, operator of the Lizard Island Resort, also operates charter flights between Cairns and Lizard Island. Contact Delaware North for information about these: +61 (0)3 9413 6288.

Please note that LIRS assumes that you are arriving and departing on the Hinterland RPT unless you tell us otherwise.

Baggage limit

Baggage on the Hinterland Aviation RPT service is limited to 32 kg per person, including all carry-on baggage. However, if you have additional luggage or freight, please contact Hinterland Aviation (+61 (0)7 4030 1333) and they will advise if any excess charges are payable.

We have been asked by Hinterland Aviation to ensure that Research Station visitors do not present at check-in with large, hard containers such as Nally bins. Containers that are larger in any dimension than a large suitcase may not fit into the luggage pods on some of the aircraft. Several small bags are better than one huge bag. Bulky equipment should be sent ahead by barge.

Transfers between airstrip and Research Station

On arrival at Lizard Island, you will be met and transferred to the Research Station by vehicle. Please advise the arrival time of your flight so we know when to expect you.

Chartering aircraft

Charter flights generally cost more per person than the scheduled flight. Groups of more than 9 people who want to travel together must charter a flight because the regular scheduled flight does not have additional capacity. If you do charter a flight, advise the Research Station of the company and the expected time of arrival and departure as soon as you know these details.

Several charter companies operate from Cairns. When obtaining quotes:

  • Ensure that the quote includes the landing fee at Lizard Island, which is charged per aircraft per landing. Visitors to the Research Station are not exempt from the landing fee.2The operators in Cairns do not uniformly include this fee in their quotes, so make sure it is specified.
  • Find out the baggage allowance for the quoted aircraft. Either stick to that allowance or arrange for more capacity.
