I have been interested in minerals from a very early age, about 5, but have a curiosity for all branches of Natural History. I have been working at the Australian Museum since 1979, starting off as a Technical Officer (Scientific) and progressing to Scientific Officer, in the Geoscience (Mineralogy and Petrology) Unit. I have been Collection Manager for Mineralogy and Petrology since 1989. My scientific interests include X-ray diffraction and laser Raman studies of minerals, computer applications in Mineralogy, zeolite and cave minerals, and meteorites.
I travel widely, visiting Museum mineral displays and mineral field collecting sites all over Australia and overseas. Most of the field work has been in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland, but has recently extended to New Zealand. My work also involves giving talks on various mineral and meteorite topics at conferences and seminars, as well as talks to professional & amateur societies.
Although I conduct research on zeolite minerals and meteorites, my main work is at Jenolan Caves, NSW, studying a range of uncommon cave minerals with joint researchers over the last 12 years. The results of these investigations are published in a range of Australian and overseas scientific journals and popular magazines. I have appeared several times on “Totally Wild’ on Channel 10 TV, and have given newspaper and radio interviews on meteorites and minerals. I greatly enjoy giving tours through the Australian Museum mineral collection and giving visitors an insight into the amazing world of minerals. My main hobby of Astronomy also helps with my Museum work on meteorites.
