The Green Umbrellas representing Australia at the 2009 Climate Actions Competition in Denmark
Hi! We’re the Green Umbrellas.
During May, we were lucky enough to be selected as one of 6 finalist teams to compete in the Climate Actions competition, which was held in Copenhagen, in Denmark. We were the only all girls team, and also the only team selected from the southern hemisphere.
During the competition, we got to spend 3 days working with experts, meeting people from around the world, and, of course, sightseeing.
The Climate Connections competition was held at the same time and place – both the competitions were run by Lego - so that all together there were about 60 teams from almost 30 different countries. We got to talk to all of them, and made friends with people from the Irish and Egyptian teams.
In our part of the competition, we had to identify and research one problem caused by climate change and come up with a solution to address it. Our solution aimed to reduce water usage in urban areas, using a ten year policy plan and an education framework. We were moer concerned with changing people’s mindsets and habits than using technology as a short term solution.
At the end of the competition, we won the research award, and got a cool lego trophy. We were also runners-up for the Innovation award. The team that won the Innovation Award, a team from California, got to implement their solution in real life.
We had a really great time at the competition, as well as being able to look around Denmark for a few days. Copenhagen is a really pretty city, and has a really fun theme park called Tivoli gardens.
The whole thing was a really fantastic experience, and we wouldn’t have been able to go if without the support of the Australian Museum, Australian Geographic, our school, and, of course, our parents and our coach, Kate.
All in all, 30 hours of travel there, 30 back, and probably twice that in work, it was definitely worth it.
