Clean Green Coal has been fined $400 billion after a landmark ruling from the Climate Change High Court yesterday. The case had been in the courts since 2012. Clean Green Coal was found guilty of negligence in its failure to prevent carbon dioxide from coal combustion entering the atmosphere. Ms Julie Garradd, Senior Council, had this response in defence of her client.

Julie:
back in 2010, the science was inconclusive and adding technology to capture the carbon dioxide would have increased the price of electricity dramatically. Consumers were just not prepared for that.

But today the High Court disagreed with her. It ruled that the IPCC assessments available back in 2010 were sufficient evidence to warrant taking action. The families of the original litigants, mostly horse breeders, dairy farmers and winegrowers, will use the windfall to compensate for loss of earnings over the last three decades. They also confirmed that half of the $400billion will be given to the World Wildlife Rescue Institute to expand the wildlife refuges along the world heritage Great Diving Range corridor. Clean Green Coal provided coal to most of NSWs power plants in the early years of this century, before they converted to solar thermal and geothermal plants between 2012 and 2020.
