This is a small food bowl from Makira-Ulawa Province of the Solomon Islands. It may have been used in celebrations, festivals or rituals. The frigate bird, dolphin and shark were often depicted in food bowls as they played an important role in Solomon Island rituals and art. The bowl was sold to the museum in 1889 by John Stephens.
