String bags with intricate designs are still popular today among the people of Papua New Guinea and foreign visitors. They have many uses and come in many sizes.
This woman carries her baby in a large bag, leaving her hands free for other tasks. The soft texture and open weave of the bag create a comfortable cradle for the baby. At Emo village Hurley saw babies in bags hanging in the shade of house verandas.
