'Our nets were working hard. Some of the new areas we were sampling were rough on the bottom, and dragging the nets along was taking a toll. To reinforce them, and to prevent extra wear and tear, some of the talented technical staff on board repaired the nets using extra-strong materials. It was actually very difficult to tie all the right knots in the right places with the right tension. The extra tassels of rope acted as ‘sacrificial’ pieces: they wore out before the net did. Once this orange addition was made to the net, we renamed it "dragon-belly"!'
