'At this point we got caught in a big storm, and all we could do was beat directly into the wind to stay as comfortable as possible. There were no islands we could shelter behind. The sea was freezing over and the outside temperature fell to about -35° Celsius. The ice built up on the ship very rapidly. The strange patterns on the deck show where heated pipes underneath try to prevent ice buildup. After the storm, we saw that the waves had pounded the side of a shipping container on deck until it caved in. We also had to use the fire hose to help remove ice.'
