Image: Panel from the Bale Kambang, Floating Pavilion
Panel from the Bale Kambang, Floating Pavilion, in the Kerta Gosa complex, Semarapura, Bali. This panel shows “the broken boat,” an image from the pelintangan calendar. The pelintangan is not a calendar for telling what the date is today but is a way of showing the intersecting of two different sets of influences in the days of the five and seven-day week. It is used to determine the likely character of a person born on a particular day and it specify what offerings should be made to alleviate sickness and misfortune according to the day of birth of the individual. This particular image can be seen in the pelintangan in the Forge Collection (E074232 and E074230).
