Image: Indigenous Taroko - Clay Figue, Taiwan: E77554
This clay figure of a tribal member of Taroko (Truku) was acquired in 1973, when the slow process of informal acceptance and recognition of indigenous Taiwanese was taking place – even though the Taroko group was not officially recognised until 2004. The figure was probably made for tourists but it is also a statement of identity, as it encapsulates indigenous decorum with facial tattoos which in the past was strongly associated with headhunting.
