Giant Burrowing Frog, Heleioporus australiacus
Last Updated: 5 July 2010
I've checked through the Museum research specimen database and we do not have any records of Giant Burrowing frogs from as far west as Bathurst - the most western record is Mt Victoria. The species you have seen could be a an Eastern Banjo Frog (Limnodynastes dumerilii) which is similar in size and appearance and occurs throughout the western slopes and adjscent areas of the western plains in NSW. A good photo of this species appears in the book 'Tadpoles of Southeastern Australia' by Marion Anstis (2002).
