Here is Julie Hoang from Baulkham Hills High School in Sydney. The base of her dress is sewn from tote bags and a zipper. The colourful ruffles on her dress and headpiece are sewn from shopping bags, using clear plastic thread. Each ruffle is fitted at the outer edge with wire for strength of shape, and with black leather strips from a handbag for definition. Julie was inspired by the birds of paradise widely, and each ruffle is for a member of their colourful family. Yet some birds inspired particular parts of her outfit. Spot the white strappy, curving elements inspired by the head plumes of the King of Saxony Bird of Paradise. See some spiral shapes on her dress and headdress, in reference to the tail feathers of the King Bird of Paradise and Magnificent Bird of Paradise. Translucent plastic bags float from the back, giving a sense of fluttering movement, and suggesting wings. Chicken wire and foam sheet form a sash-like feature around the top.
