We’re starting the Secondary School category with our youngest entrant. Bonita Poppy Alexander from Lourdes Hill College in Brisbane is wearing her design, titled Wilson’s Bird of Paradise. Bonita has included the various bright colours of the male bird, and only those colours. The hem is high, to note that it’s one of the smaller birds of paradise. The base of her dress is made from green shopping bags and the zipper from a pencil case. The outside of her dress is covered with plastic string fruit and vegetable bags. Below the waist, the bags are layered like feathers. On top, bags are curled in reference to the bird’s tail feathers. Her appreciation for these feathers is also apparent in her hat, where the stem of a discarded plastic floral arrangement has been shaped like them, into two opposing curls. The hat base is a take-away container painted blue with black lines, to echo the colouring on this bird’s bare head.
