E078218 canoe, bark, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.
This canoe is from the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. The canoe is constructed from a single length of bark, possibly River Red Gum bark. The inside surface of the canoe is smooth while the outer surface is rough. The sides curve upwards with the deepest section in the centre. One end of the canoe is flattened and points upwards while the other is more curved. Canoes of this type were generally used in the inland waters of south-east Australia.
