Location and accessible entrance

The Australian Museum's main entrance is located on the corner of College Street and William Street in central Sydney, just across the road from Hyde Park and opposite St Mary’s Cathedral.

The main entrance via Museum Walk ramp from College Street is wheelchair accessible, and can be found at what3words///ports.penny.winter.

Accessible parking and public transport

There is currently no parking available at the Museum. We recommend parking at nearby car parks and metered parking in surrounding streets.

Enacon Parking on Cathedral Street has 11 accessible spots and is a 5 minute walk to the Australian Museum. This route has no steps. For more information please refer to the Enacon Parking website.

There is a bus drop off zone on William Street near the Group Entrance: No Parking Coaches Excepted 8am-5pm.


  • Accessible drop off zone

    The new William Street Bus Bay located directly outside the Australian Museum, can be used for up to 5 minutes as a pick-up and drop-off for individuals and groups with access requirements. Please be aware that the street has an incline and therefore does not meet the standards of an accessible pick up and drop off. Please contact security if you require any assistance on 9320 6335.

  • Car parking station

    Wilson Parking on Riley Street

    Australian Museum visitors can park at Wilson Parking – 70 Riley St for $19* Monday – Friday, and $10** for nights and weekends.

    Wilson Parking at the Domain

    Australian Museum visitors can park at Wilson Parking – 1 St Mary's Road, Domain for $20 Monday – Friday, and $10 on weekends.

    *$19 day rate is only available when you pre-book online at 70 Riley Street. Available Monday-Friday, booked entry time must be after 6am, and booked exit time must be before 5pm.     Secure Parking at the Hilton Hotel Car Park is a ten minute walk away, located within the Hilton Sydney Hotel, Pitt Street.

    Convenient to Westfield, Myer, QVB, David Jones and Hyde Park, park here to make your visit to the Australian Museum a visit to the city too!

  • Parking meters

    Metered parking is available in the surrounding streets of the Museum.

  • Trains

    The nearest train stations are St James, Museum and Town Hall. Each are of equal distance to us and are an easy seven-minute walk. All three of these stations have lift access.

    If you have a stroller or wheelchair, please note that your journey through Hyde Park will end in stairs at each of the Museum corners on College/Park Streets. Level exit is available at the St Mary's Cathedral pedestrian crossing if coming from St James Station, and at the corner of College and Liverpool Streets if coming from Museum Station.

  • Buses

    For bus services arriving in the city centre, alight near Hyde Park or Town Hall and simply walk east along Park Street towards Kings Cross - a 7 to 10 minute walk.

    The Museum is also on the Sydney and Bondi Hop-on Hop-off Tour bus route with a stop right outside our doors.

    Most Sydney CBD bus services offer wheelchair accessibility. You can check the accessibility of a particular service when using either the Transport for NSW Trip Planner or the TripView App.


Getting around the Museum

The Australian Museum provides access to all areas of the Museum for people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters. There are ramps throughout the exhibitions and two lifts to take you between all floors. All doors are automatic.


  • Guide Dogs and Companion Dogs

    The Australian Museum welcomes guide dogs and companion dogs. A water bowl is kept at Admissions desk.

  • Toilets

    Wheelchair accessible toilets are located on all public gallery floors including Ground, Lower Ground near Claoking, Level 1 and Level 2.

    A wheelchair accessible toilet is also located on Level 4 by No. 1 William.

    The AM has a Changing Places adult change table located on level 2. Please request the access to this facility from any AM staff, security or from the admission desk.

  • Baby change rooms

    Baby change rooms are available on Lower Ground near Cloaking, and in the Level 2 Parents Room.

  • Food and dining

    There are accessible areas to eat in the Museum:

    • The Billabong Waterhole kiosk is located on Level 2.
  • Quiet times

    The Museum opens at 10am which is generally when the Museum is at its quietest. School term is quieter unless there are a lot of school students booked in.

    School holidays and rainy days can be very busy.

    The AM also runs a series of Early Birds Access Mornings to provide a reduced-sensory, relaxed and supportive environment for visitors on the autism spectrum or those who have other access requirements. Visitors, together with their family and friends, can explore the AM before it opens to the general public at their own pace and without all the noise, crowds and other high sensory aspects of visiting a museum.
