The great Ravis stood out boldly and as the tide was high and the mudflats covered the village appeared as if it had recently been flooded. (Frank Hurley, Diary 1, 6 October 1922. By permission of the National Library of Australia)
Hurley's photo of Kaimare is the only aerial view of a Purari River village.
Kaimare had three sections, each with a longhouse (Ravi) and many family houses. The longhouses were the centre of men's lives where they made and stored their ritual items and planned and held ceremonies.
