Tiger Mite - Ian Joass

This mite appears around May to June, usually after the first heavy rains. I'm not sure of the name of this mite, but I call it the Tiger Mite due to its spectacular orange stripes on its abdomen which are due to the way the hairs on its body are positioned and the angle that the light hits them at. This is a very large mite, around three millimetres long and appears to be predacious of other mites. I took this photo on a granite outcrop on our property, which was very difficult as the mite would move out of view or curl into a ball when disturbed.
