Tabua, Fiji (E004932)

Tabua, Fiji
Acquired 18 December 1894

Many of the tabua held by the Australian Museum are polished smooth, with the natural grooves of the whale’s tooth rubbed away when crafted, or through handling prior to acquisition. In contrast, this tabua is quite rough and still has the grooves still intact, and so is closer to the natural state of the whale's tooth.
