Image: Vanuatu 1996 - sorting the catch at night
The image shows Robert, Jeff and Dave sorting a large catch from relatively shallow water at Erromango Island. Working conditions on the MV Lewia were very cramped. On top of the narrow bench (that often doubled as a bed) on the right is a pile of diving regulators. Under the bench are various pieces of collecting equipment. The large wooden box below the Australian flag towel contains one of the 2 air compressors that were brought by the Smithsonian staff for filling the scuba tanks. Behind Robert are white scuba tanks waiting to be filled later that night.
