Cast of the skull of Homo neanderthalensis Amud 1, discovered in 1961 in Amud, Israel. Its age is 45,000 years old. The features and skull shape – particularly the brow ridge, nose, jaw and back of the skull – of this Middle Eastern Neanderthal are much less robust and the skull bone thinner compared to European specimens such as La Chapelle-aux-Saints. This is probably due to the Middle Eastern Neanderthal population having evolved adaptations to the warmer climate.
