The species occurs in offshore waters and is infrequently encountered close to the coast. It is recorded from the Indo-Pacific region and rarely from the Atlantic. In Australia it occurs in most marine offshore areas, but has not been recorded from Northern Territory waters or the Gulf of Carpentaria.
