Image: Shirase expedition, Sydney, 1911 #5
From May to November 1911, the Japanese Antarctic Expedition lead by Lt Nobu Shirase, wintered in Parsley Bay, Vaucluse in Sydney Harbour. The scientists and crew established friendships with local residents and their children.
Recently, these photographs taken by the expedition’s doctor were sent from Japan to the Australian Museum. Do you recognise any of these families?
