Notes

By 1900 there was already important trade between Sydney and Japan, via the regular monthly passenger steamships of the NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) initially operating with Burns Philp and Company, and there were about 60 Japanese residents, supported by the local Japanese Society and the Japanese Consul, Miki Saito.

The consul gave garden parties at his home “Ivanhoe” in Croydon, where Japanese businessmen could mingle with leading members of the Sydney community, including Professor Edgeworth David and his wife.
