The dinghy is useless hereabouts owing to the mudbanks at low tide; the canoe on the other hand may be sledged across this ooze with comparative ease, there being always plenty of assistance available for a few glakes of tobacco. (Frank Hurley, Diary 3, 6 January 1923. By permission of the National Library of Australia). The walkways that linked the different parts of the villages on Urama Island were constructed on the orders of the Papuan Government in an attempt to improve living conditions.
