Notes

Today before being activated, the masks are carried on the heads of congregation members from Pura Bale Batur to a spring in the grounds of the temple Pura Tirta Seganing in the north of the village on a tributary of the Unda River, where they are bathed with holy water (tirta). When Anthony Forge was in Kamasan this temple - which dates back to the Gelgel Kingdom - was covered in rubble from the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung – it was excavated in the early 1980s.
