The dance demonstration started inside the longhouse and then moved outside for the benefit of Hurley's cameras. Following custom, women and unitiated children could not watch the performance. Hurley and McCulloch tried to buy some masks, but the masks were needed for the ceremony. They were finally offered two old masks that no longer had ritual significance and were stored on the veranda of a family house. The masks were hastily repaired and repainted for sale.
