Lasso Weight E10082B

Lasso weight (te atau) made of shell. Long strings of coconut fibre were tied to such weights through a hole at one end. It was used to catch frigate birds on Banaba. The long black feathers of the frigate bird were used to decorate the hair of Banaban people and their war dance spears. This lasso weight was collected by Mr A E Stephens and donated to the Australian Museum in 1901 by the Pacific Islands Company.
