Additional information
McCulloch wanted to buy bullroarers in Kau longhouse. After much discussion the men agreed to sell one from each bundle under the spirit figures. McCulloch later wrote to the director of the Australian Museum that he had stolen an extra one. When the Papuan Government learned about the theft, it confiscated several bullroarers and a spirit board for return to Kaimare. This incident may explain why the Assistant Government Anthropologist, FE Williams, left the expedition after only one week.
