Image: Horned Turtle
Skeletal remains of an extinct Horned Turtle, Meiolania platyceps owen, have been recovered from several sites on Lord Howe Island. They are found in ancient coral-sand rock (calcarenite) of Late Pleistocene age (25,000-100,000 years old). Dr Eugene Gaffney, American Museum of Natural History, New York, was able to reconstruct an entire skeleton from the remains, which included several complete skulls
