In the midst of a hot Brisbane summer this February I was fortunate enough to capture Australia’s largest native bee, the Great Carpenter Bee, in the act of “buzz pollination”, vibrating her thoracic muscles to produce sound waves which cause the anthers of the Melastoma Affine, or Blue Tongue, flower to release the pollen stored inside these tubes like structures.
