Firetail Gudgeon - juvenile

An immature Firetail Gudgeon caught in Manly Dam, Sydney, New South Wales. The fish was in a group of 20-25 individuals schooling at the base of a small cascade at the far end of the dam. They were quite small, all around 20-30 mm.

Notes

Thank you to Doug Hoese for identifying the fish. He said "I suspect it is an immature Hypseleotris galii, which normally has 7 dorsal spines. Also it has too many second dorsal rays to be H. compressa (which has 6 spines and I, 8-9 for D2). Great photo.".
