Notes

Next is Mia Nicole Johnson from Gordon in Victoria, a student of the Australian Catholic University. Stefanie Johnson models this design, titled ‘Gonatus onyx’. Mia-Nicole was struck by an image of a female of this squid species carrying an egg mass, and this design abstracts and represents it. Consider the hat – a polystyrene cone on an up-side-down plastic bowl. It is edged by plastic forks and bottle tops. With the use of paint, it’s all in red. The bodice is made from a PVC non-slip mat, and closed at the back with fish-hooks. It’s gathered, melted and sewn at the base for a tapered shape. The outer layers of the plastic bag skirt are split in sections. Each of them is gathered and tied with a netting bow, as tentacles. The fishing net sewn onto the skirt base, represents the egg bag. The Polystyrene balls represent eggs. Spot these ‘eggs’ in the net, and as details on her plastic-bag covered shoes.
