Notes

Tess Taverner Hanks from Cheltenham Girls High School in Sydney is next, wearing her untitled creation. She was inspired by the traditional dress of PNG highlanders, which usually includes bird of paradise feathers, along with foliage. Tess sewed a skirt base from a curtain and made it full and firm by adding foam. Hair from various coloured synthetic wigs was cut into clumps that could look like tufts of bird of paradise plumes, and then sewn onto the skirt base. Tess’s top is made from this hair too! Clumps were braided or twisted, and then woven with the help of adhesive interfacing. The hat base is an up-side-down hanging basket. Tess glued a variety of plant items onto it, even potpourri. It could well be a bird’s nest! To finish and unify, she added hair to her hat with wire, and made hair sprout from her shoes. Tess’s use of hair is also a playful reversal; this is a costume in honour of the birds of paradise which includes human hair.
