This shield is from St Clair Mission in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. The shield is carved from a solid piece of wood. It is very small and narrow tapering to a point at either end. A handle has been carved into the back of the shield. This style of shield was restricted to the south-eastern area of Australia. It was collected by Alexander Morrison in the late 19th or early 20th Century and acquired by the Australian Museum in 1981.
