E078182 shield, wood / ochre, western Queensland, Australia.
This shield is from western Queensland, Australia. The shield is oval in shape and a handle has been carved into the surface of the wood at the back of the shield. Both surfaces of the shield have been engraved with an interlocked, diamond design which has been painted with red ochre. Small holes over the surface of the shield are evidence of insect damage. It was collected by Alexander Morrison in the late 19th or early 20th Century and acquired by the Australian Museum in 1982.
