Chinstrap Jawfish, Opistognathus sp

The vast majority of the fishes collected during the Solomon Islands survey were less than 6 cm in length.

The image shows a 5 cm long Chinstrap Jawfish, Opistognathus sp (Family Opistognathidae).

Jawfishes have very large mouths, hence the common name. Some species live in burrows with only the large head visible. The specimen in the image was collected at Ndendo Island, Solomon Islands.
